Business process automation has proven to be a game changer for businesses over the last 20 years, yet a 2020 global McKinsey survey shows 75 % of small businesses are not fully utilising automation tools. This implies small businesses still have major concerns surrounding automation. Let’s unveil 4 key myths:
Myth: Automation is only for large organisations
Automation solutions are scalable to fit any size organisation. Most pricing structures offer packages per user which can be leveraged depending on the size of the organisation or even a department. Solutions also offer on-demand monthly licenses for small businesses to scale up in peak seasons and downsize in low periods. Small business solutions also offer low-code, cloud platforms with user-friendly interfaces, eliminating the need for large IT departments.

Myth: Automation is costly
While embracing automation technology requires some investment, the savings from eliminating duplicated efforts, costly mistakes and loss of customer confidence, far exceed the up-front purchase. In addition, studies show businesses that embrace automation are six times more likely to have meaningful revenue growth, than companies that don’t use automation. However, a proper investigation should be conducted to ensure the technology aligns with the business needs, and is value for money. Free open-source options are a good starting point for small businesses with cost constraints. There is technology out there for every budget!
Myth: Automation will replace people
The objective of automation is to address repetitive tasks and those that can easily be standardised. In small businesses, we are all wearing too many hats, and any technology that can reduce workloads and improve the process at the same time is a welcome respite.
With the right tools and implementation, automation will free employees to handle more rewarding activities and be more innovative, while allowing companies to increase revenues and scale up.

Myth: Automation is tough
Anything new seems tough when you have not yet spent the time to educate yourself, explore the pros and cons and investigate the options that are right for you. Automation requires thorough planning, testing, implementation in stages and monitoring for ongoing improvement.
In addition, part of any strategy would require employee buy-in. Effective communication to set expectations, ongoing training and encouraging a culture of innovation, are keys to automation success.
